Our World Treasure - A PLACE TO KEEP SPECIAL- in 2009 the Great Sandy Strait region was awarded Biosphere Reserve status by UNESCO, giving world wide recognition to the Fraser Coast region as an UNIQUE WORLD TREASURE, equal to region in the same class as Galapos Islands, Central Amazon & Ulura Australia's Red Centre. This highlights the significance of the outstanding natural beauty of our region, where major breeding sites for endangered Marine Turtles, breeding sites for migratory shorebirds & our Humpback whales visit annually. All year round the Mary River catchment is home to around 2000 plant species & 700 native anaimals including platypus Mary River Cod, Lungfish Mary River turtles as well as freshwater turtles with a rare gaint barred frog. DOES THE COAL MINE HAVE THE RITE TO ENDANGER OUR LOCAL TREASURES ????
